What is Heat Check

A live debate experience where pressure becomes practice.

We are not short on opinions. We are short on practice staying present when conversations get intense.

Heat Check is a facilitated live experience led by Cirak that combines fast-paced debate, nervous-system awareness, and guided self-regulation.

Participants take opposing positions and debate face-to-face. Depending on the format, Heat Check can unfold as a focused 1:1 debate or allow participants to tag in and out as the conversation develops.

As different voices enter the conversation, positions are challenged, the energy builds, and the whole room becomes part of what is happening.

Trained facilitators watch for rising activation and raise red Heat Check flags when the pressure reaches a threshold.

When the flags go up, everything stops. No one is judged. No one is shamed. No one is voted out.

Instead, the entire room pauses together while Cirak guides participants through a few minutes of simple sensation awareness—observing what is happening in the body without reacting to it.

Then the debate comes alive again.

Heat Check turns disagreement into a live practice: get activated, notice it, regulate, and return.

The goal isn’t to eliminate intensity. It’s to discover what happens when you can stay present inside it.

Why This is Different

Most debates ask: Who made the better argument?

Heat Check asks: What happens to you while you’re arguing?

Participants take opposing positions. Voices sharpen. Pressure builds. The room gets invested. And right when the instinct is to push harder, defend, attack, withdraw, or prove your point—we pause.

That interruption is the practice.

  • Debate can be 1:1 or include rotating participants
  • Participation is dynamic rather than fixed
  • No one is eliminated or voted out
  • The Heat Check flag is never punitive
  • Activation becomes something to observe, not suppress
  • The entire room pauses together
  • Regulation happens inside the difficult conversation
  • The debate resumes after every pause
  • Agreement is never required

Heat Check does not avoid tension. It teaches people how to meet it.

Why This Matters

Universities, workplaces, organizations, and communities all ask people to navigate disagreement. But few of us ever practice what to do when disagreement becomes personal, physical, and emotionally activating.

Heat Check gives people that practice—in real time.

Participants experience activation, rather than merely talking about it

Heat Check deliberately creates enough pressure for students to notice defensiveness, urgency, frustration, excitement, and the impulse to react as they are happening.

The whole room practices regulation together

Because the whole room is engaged in the debate, the pause is not simply for the person who became “too emotional.” Everyone stops. Everyone checks in. Everyone practices.

Dialogue becomes more flexible and less reactive

Students discover that disagreement can continue after activation. They can pause, regulate, and return without needing to withdraw, attack, or force agreement.

FAQ

Heat Check is an educational experience. It allows participants to apply the benefits of mindfulness-based stress reduction in real time. In our current climate, there is nothing more important than knowing how to navigate conflict in productive ways. With Heat Check, your participants will benefit from actively learning these skills in a fun, no-stress environment.

Heat Check is a format designed for fun. The lightness and engaging nature of the event removes any stress or shame from the fact that we all get activated sometimes. The education participant receive is experiential–which is known to be the best way to retain new information. Participants watch, learn, and participate in a format that makes sense to them.

Participants play one of three roles: flag facilitator, debate participant, or audience member.

  • Flag facilitators receive training in conflict resolution before the event, then get to practice their skills in real time.
  • Debate participants receive an experience unique to Heat Check: they learn to articulate their ideas while maintaining an awareness of their physical activation. This is a practice of metacognition known to promote awareness, innovation, and collaboration.
  • Audience members at Heat Check are not just bystanders. They participate in the calming pause, giving them a chance to realize the impact of what they observe on their own experience.

Bringing attention to our own activation on a physical, non-intellectual level helps us:

  • Make decisions under pressure
  • Promote collaboration
  • Navigate conflict
  • Build confidence during stressful times

Note: These skills are especially valuable when navigating social media and other algorithmically motivated sources of information that are designed to promote activation.

Heat Check works with our hosts to determine which topics fit your organization. Topics range from debating college course requirements to local policies on environmental regulation to the use of AI in education. We pick topics designed for practice. We never debate the value of a person and we never shame anyone for their ideas.

Heat Check posts edited episodes on YouTube for participants to share with friends and family. Our goal in sharing our show is to demonstrate the value of mindful awareness in conflict resolution. We seek to counter negative online content with educational demonstrations of healthy, innovative debate.

About Cirak

Cirak is an author, speaker, and creator of Heat Check.

His work explores the hidden beliefs, identities, and automatic patterns that shape how we think, react, and relate—often without us realizing it.

His approach is simple: see what operates you before it operates you. Heat Check brings that work into live disagreement, helping participants recognize what is happening beneath their reactions and return to the conversation with greater clarity and choice.
